Hardware FAQ
What device do you send me?
A pre-configured WiFi 6 access point built for CaptiFi. It's enterprise-grade, dual-band (2.4GHz + 5GHz), and supports 100+ simultaneous connections.
Do I need the CaptiFi device?
Not necessarily. If you already have compatible hardware (UniFi, Aruba, TP-Link Omada), CaptiFi can integrate directly. See BYOD Guide.
What's the WiFi range?
Approximately 30-50 metres indoors, depending on walls and interference. For larger venues, additional access points can be added.
Can I mount it on the ceiling?
Yes — ceiling and wall mounting hardware is included.
Is it weatherproof?
No. The CaptiFi device is designed for indoor use only. For outdoor areas, contact us about weatherproof options.
Can I use it alongside my existing WiFi?
Yes. The CaptiFi device creates a separate guest WiFi network alongside your existing private network. Your business devices stay on your private network as usual.
What if the device stops working?
Contact us — we'll troubleshoot remotely first. If the issue can't be resolved, we'll send a replacement device at no charge. Replacements typically arrive within 2-3 working days.
What happens if my device physically breaks?
If the device is damaged due to a manufacturing fault or normal wear and tear, we'll replace it free of charge. If the damage is caused by misuse (e.g. water damage, drops), a replacement fee may apply. Just get in touch and we'll sort it out.
Can I move the device to a different venue?
Yes. Simply unplug the device, take it to your new location, and plug it in. You may need to update your venue details in the CaptiFi dashboard to reflect the new address. If you're changing the network setup significantly, our support team can help.
Can I use my existing UniFi access points?
Yes! CaptiFi integrates natively with UniFi. See the UniFi Setup Guide.
How many access points do I need?
For most single-room venues, one access point is enough. For larger or multi-room spaces:
- 1 AP: Up to ~100m² / 1,000 sq ft
- 2 APs: Up to ~200m² / 2,000 sq ft
- 3+ APs: Larger venues, multiple floors, outdoor areas
What power supply does the device need?
The device comes with a power adapter and plugs into a standard UK mains socket. It can also run via PoE (Power over Ethernet) if your network supports it — useful for ceiling-mounted installations.
Do I need to keep the device plugged in all the time?
Yes. The device needs to be powered on to broadcast your guest WiFi network. If it loses power, the guest network simply goes offline until it's powered back on — no data is lost.
